Planting and care

Choose a position in full sun to partial shade, preferably sheltered from strong winds and with well-draining soil. Plant the bulbs in autumn, before the ground freezes, with the pointed tip facing upwards. Water thoroughly after planting, but avoid waterlogged conditions. Water during prolonged dry periods in spring, paying particular attention to containers, where the soil can dry out more quickly. After flowering, remove faded blooms if desired, but leave the foliage in place until it has naturally yellowed and died back.

Plant the bulbs in autumn and enjoy the anticipation of seeing the first shoots emerge and the dramatic blooms open in late spring.
