Leeks are biennial plants related to onions. People who like strong flavours and aromas choose leeks. Leeks are a spring crop and are planted in early May, but leek seeds are sown as early as March. Like onions, leeks are harvested in late autumn and are suitable for storage in a warehouse or cellar. Leeks are very popular for their vitamins and minerals. They are rich in potassium, magnesium and vitamin C. Leeks are used in many dishes. Leeks are used to flavour soups, salads and stews. Leeks are often used to decorate and garnish dishes. Leeks need to be washed well for cooking, as there is a lot of soil between the leaves, and all wilted leaves and hardened parts need to be removed. Leeks are the most popular and widely grown vegetable in Lithuania.
Leeks are grown on sufficiently moist, fertile, deeply ploughed clay soil, which is fertilised with manure in the autumn. Acidic soils are not suitable. They grow well when fertilised with compost and nitrogen fertiliser. Propagate by seeds sown in greenhouses or boxes in mid-March.
