Cucumbers can be sprouted or the seeds can be sown directly in the bed. Cucumber seeds can be planted in a variety of soil types, but the best growing medium is light loam and humusy, mineral-rich soil, which should be fertilised every autumn. The planting site should be warm and receive sufficient sun.
After sowing the seeds in peat pots up to 1 cm deep, they should be covered with plastic wrap and kept at a temperature of between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius until the seeds germinate. Once the seeds have germinated, the temperature can be reduced to 23 degrees. Subsequently, the optimum temperature for growing seedlings is 22 degrees during the day and 18-20 degrees at night. Cucumber seedlings planted in the greenhouse should be about 25-30 cm tall with 5-6 leaves and a well-developed root system. The plants shall be planted at a density of 2,5-2,8 plants/m2 , leaving aisles. The optimum soil temperature in the root zone of the plants should be 18-20°C. If the soil cannot be warmed to at least 16°C, it is better not to plant cucumbers and to wait until the weather warms up. The seedlings are planted deeper than they were in the nursery. Water the cucumbers infrequently but abundantly before flowering. They then grow less but produce more flowers. Once they have flowered and begun to set fruit, water frequently but less. Cucumbers that are ripening should be watered with plenty of warm water (22-25°C) in the first half of the day, taking care not to drench the leaves. In the greenhouse, outdoor cucumbers will only produce a lot of lush foliage and a few fruits. In addition, field cucumbers almost always yield twice or more than twice as much as hybrid greenhouse cucumbers; cucumbers with white thorns are slower to yellow
