Nowadays, it is unlikely that you will find a gardener who grows vegetables without fertilising them at all. Some of them choose natural, time-tested fertilisers (e.g. manure, herbal leaven, etc.), while others buy ready-made fertilisers from garden supply stores. No one doubts that this is the right thing to do, but when is the right time?

A plant only needs nutrients when it is growing, leafing out, flowering or ripening. As autumn approaches, growth stops. In perennial plants, nutrients move from the leaves (they die back) to the roots. The dormant phase begins. Thus, fertilisation in late autumn is not necessary. Mineral fertilisers applied at this time will simply be washed away and leach into the groundwater.
