They are valued as wonderful, undemanding, ornamental plants. Most of them bloom in early spring after the snow has melted, and in autumn they are also very beautiful when planted in large groups in meadows and rock gardens.
Crocus grow best in light, moist but not waterlogged, fertile loamy and sandy loam soil in full sun. They are very undemanding plants. The crocus should be fertilised with a complex fertiliser in autumn and a nitrogenous, fast-dissolving fertiliser in spring.
The crocus should be replanted every two years to ensure annual flowering. Spring-flowering crocuses are best planted between September and the first half of October. Autumn-flowering crocuses in early August. Under no circumstances should the excavated tubers be dried in the sun. Store in a warm, well-ventilated room.
When frosts set in and the topsoil freezes, the crocus can be soaked but does not need to be. Peat, half-rotted compost, leaves or straw will do.
