Fritillaries are perennial bulbous plants from the lily family with decorative, bell-shaped flowers. They occur naturally in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Western and Central Europe, Turkey and Iran. The genus includes approximately 50 species.

Fritillaries prefer dry, sunny positions. The soil should be fertile, well-structured and well-drained. Heavy clay soil can be improved by adding sand. The plants can remain in the same position for three years or longer.

The scent of fritillaries helps repel rodents, so planting them near tulips may help protect tulip bulbs.

Fritillaries can be propagated from seeds or bulbs. Fresh seeds germinate quickly, while older seeds may take up to a year. Young bulbs can be planted in their permanent position during their second year, preferably in September.

Planting position: Spring- and summer-flowering bulbs grow best in a sunny position.

Soil type: Any well-drained soil is suitable. Humus may be added if necessary.
