Chinese Brassicas, with their mild-flavoured, succulent leaves, have many advantages: they are frost-resistant, fertile and nutrient-rich. In terms of vitamins, mineral salts and amino acids, they are superior to other cabbage plants. Brassicas sown in summer mature more quickly because the days are longer and temperatures warmer than in spring.
Chinese brassicas are biennial. Seeds are sown in greenhouses for early growth and in the open ground for later harvesting. Brassicas prefer neutral clay soils and light to moderate clay soils.
It is important to irrigate brassicas with warm water, especially in late summer harvest. A few weeks after planting, the soil should be mulched and thinned occasionally, but transplanting should not be done. Fertilizers should also be applied, especially on hot days, preferably as foliar fertilizers of calcium and boron.
