Tulips in Quebec

The leaves of these tulips have brown or red spots or stripes and curled edges. These are early-flowering and long-blooming tulips. The flowers are star- or cup-shaped, large, and usually in warm shades. Very beautiful but relatively delicate tulips; they should be planted in a well-drained spot, well covered before winter, and dug up every year. Tulips are planted in mid-September to early October, depending on the autumn weather. The ideal soil temperature is 7–10 °C, and the soil must be sufficiently moist. Planting depth and density depend on the size of the tulip bulb. As a general rule, tulips are planted at a depth of three bulb heights; in heavy soils, slightly shallower, and in light soils, deeper. Tulip bulbs are dug up every year. Only the small ones (provided they are not affected by disease) can be dug up every other year. The best time to dig up tulips is when the lower leaf has not yet completely dried out (this will vary depending on the variety).

These tulips are 35 cm tall and should be planted 15 cm deep. Tulip bulbs should be planted 10 cm apart.

Planting location: Flowers that bloom in spring and summer grow best in a sunny spot.

Soil type: Suitable for all types of soil that are not too damp. If necessary, humus can be added.

Care: Water immediately after planting and keep the soil moist whilst the plant is growing. Protect spring-flowering bulbous plants from severe frosts by covering them with a layer of peat; keep summer-flowering varieties at a temperature of no lower than 0°C.

Support: to prop up tall bulbous flowers whilst they are growing.
